My daily vitamin regime for longevity

My primary focus is on helping to minimize the natural decline of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) in my body.  Secondary are the factors linked to illness such as inflammation in the body.  It appears that most cardiovascular disease is related to inflammation. 

I have been taking vitamins for many years (OK, most of my life.)  In fact, when I moved in with my wife of over 30-years, she laughed at the pill box I had (and still have.)  I take them for various reasons, but most of it stems from a 60-Minutes story on longevity I saw as a child.  That was back when 60-Minutes had useful stuff.  LOL.  Anyway, the upshot of the longevity study was that one should under eat and over “vitaminize” yourself. 

Much of what I take is to reduce inflammation in my joints, veins, and arteries.   Below is a list of the vitamins I take every day. 

Fish oil is a big one.  I started taking fish oil in my early 40s after I started experiencing joint pain in my ankles, knees and hips.  I tried a bunch of supplements including Glucosamine.  None of which seemed to help. Then I saw an infomercial on a special fish oil from Iceland that was pretty expensive.  It turns out that fish oil is a natural anti-inflammatory.  So, I bought a bottle of fish oil at the local grocery store.  Within 30-days of starting 3 grams/day my joint pain was gone.  I thought it might be a fluke, so I suggested that my wife who was also experiencing joint pain.  She also experienced significant relief within 30-days on only 1 gram/day.  I assume that Krill oil would have the same benefit.  You should experiment with it. Try it for 30-days and see what happens.  At the very least it won’t hurt you. 

Turmeric: another anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory supplement.  I’ve heard good things, but I can’t say how much it is helping.  Some people say take  1.5 grams/day.  That’s if you have a problem, a daily regime without a targeted ailment would probably be OK with 500 mg. 

Vitamin C: It’s vitamin C.

1 Baby Aspirin: Blood thinner.  Be careful you don’t bleed out, though. 🙂

Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA): This comes from reading the 4-hour body by Tim Ferriss.  According to Ferriss “ALA is a potent anti-oxidant and free-radical scavenger..proven to regenerate Vitamin C and Vitamin E, restore levels of intracellular glutathione and important anti-oxidant that declines with age..”  He also suggest taking a lot of garlic, but I found that it was offensive to others. 

Zinc: Muscle growth and repair, Antioxident, and helps generate Testosterone. 

Vitamin D: We don’t get into the sun enough. 

GABA: Taken before bedtime to promote brain health, i.e., mood, better sleep, etc. 

Vitamin regimen:

  • 3 grams Fish Oil
  • 500 mg Turmeric
  • 500 mg Vitamin C
  • 1 baby aspirin
  • 600 mg Alpha-Lipoic Acid, 
  • 50 mg zinc, 
  • Men’s Vitamin containing Boron, 
  • 50 mcg Vitamin D
  • 750 mg Gamma-AminoButlyric Acid (GABA)
